The Harz Tower: an attraction in the heart of the Harz Mountains
The picturesque Harz region has one more attraction: the HARZTURM in Torfhaus. Germany’s highest observation tower consists of a wood and steel construction. The new landmark in the Harz Mountains was officially opened on November 2, 2023. This monumental structure not only marks a new chapter in the history of tourism in the Upper Harz, but also offers a unique perspective of the surrounding natural and cultural landscape.
Harz tower on Torfhaus – construction that defies challenges
The creation of the 65-meter-high Harz Tower is a story of perseverance and innovation. After the ground-breaking ceremony in May 2021, global events such as the coronavirus pandemic and the Ukraine and energy crises posed significant challenges. Despite the delays caused by difficulties in procuring building materials, the tower now stands proudly as a symbol of human resilience and technical achievement.
A tower sculpture that connects
The wooden, spiral structure of the tower, inspired by the shape of a rising spruce cone, was designed by the Austrian planners, architect Dietmar Kaden and structural engineer Markus Lackner. Visitors can climb the tower via steps or an elevator and enjoy the breathtaking 360° view of the Brocken, the Harz Mountains and the national park from two panoramic viewing platforms. Access to the first platform is also barrier-free.
Thrills and sustainable architecture
The Harz Tower offers a special attraction for the adventurous: the “Rasantia” adventure slide. A 110-meter-long slide that loops around the tower provides an unforgettable experience with sound and light effects. A glass skywalk at a height of 45 meters also promises an adrenaline rush. The light-flooded entrance building, predominantly made of wood, rounds off the barrier-free ensemble and houses service rooms and a souvenir store.

A festive opening
On the day before the opening, November 1, 2023, the Prime Minister of Lower Saxony, Stephan Weil, together with the investors, performed the traditional ribbon-cutting ceremony, heralding the commissioning of the Harz Tower.
A gentle start
Please note that access to the Harz Tower will initially be restricted. Weather-related delays hindered the complete installation of the slide and the elevator. Visits to the tower are initially possible between 10:00 and 16:00 on the hour and half hour.
The Harz Tower is a shining example of the combination of nature, technology and adventure. It invites you to discover the Harz Mountains from a new perspective and is sure to quickly become the centerpiece of the region and its visitors.
